The Art of Thomas Knapp
I am an artist from Denver, CO. I am not completely self-taught, but close. I had art classes throughout school, AP Art in high school, and spent a year at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. Schooling did help me, and I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to my high school art teacher, Mr. Schnell. He taught me so much without actually saying what he was teaching me. One day it just clicked that he did certain things to help me see things better in my work. What he instilled in me while in high school, took me everywhere that I needed to be. All I do is expand on the knowledge he shared.
I can't remember a time in my life when there wasn't a pen or pencil in my hand. I used to draw cartoon characters off the TV screen, or make up my own versions of characters I'd see in books or ads or anything I wanted to learn to draw or make better and my own. As I got a little older, I'd draw the t-shirts and photos in old BMX and Skateboarding magazines.
I see shapes, as my wife puts it. I see things and they stick in my head and I can re-create them on paper or canvas. I'm a very visual person, and I soak in all that I see. I rarely use reference, and I don't always play by the rules. I don't care about complimentary colors, or eye flow, or what have you. If you are looking at a painting of mine, then that's the way it was in my head. Wrong or Right...It's mine. I hope you enjoy looking at my work.

In February 2023, I self-published two photography books, collecting photos I have taken through the past 8 years. The first book is a collection of junkyard cars from properties across Colorado and Indiana. The second is a collection of car photos that I have taken as they are seen on the streets while working, driving around or traveling.
